In July, the Hawthorn Gallery is showcased the work of portrait painters. The featured artist is Arlington portraitist Mary Hilt, who painted from a live model in the gallery on June 27. Additional portrait artists on display include Levon Tokatlyan, Adele Travasiano, and Alix Fuerst.
Mary Hilt
Mary is a visual artist based in Arlington Massachusetts. She works in a wide variety of mediums, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, and pencils. She is a talented portrait painter but her oeuvre includes landscapes, still-lifes as well as the surrealistic. Mary, who is always learning, believes that experimenting enables her to grow as an artist.
Her works centers around creating a mood or a story; perhaps a flash of light streaking through glass. According to Mary, ‘people can be aCected by art. They can be sad or happily transported for a while. That is meaningful to Mary.
Mary has exhibited extensively. Her work has shown in exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. She has been featured at: The Armenian Museum of America, The Manheim Gallery in Sedona Arizona and Harvard Law School to name a few.

Levon Tokatlyan
Armenian-born artist and art conservator Levon Tokatlyan trained in Paris and London before coming to America in 1991. Now with thirty-five years of experience he has mastered the art of, among various other things, restoring paintings, murals and gold leaf framing at the highest levels. His work is masterful and undetectable even to the most discerning expert, and he has restored thousands of masterpieces during his long career.
Tokatlyan continues to refine his painterly technique through his active involvement in the art industry, where he stays up to date with state-ofthe-art methods of period art and object restoration. His vast expertise is documented in the highly acclaimed documentary, “Saving Art With Science,” and with his endorsement by Design Times.
He has conserved major works of all genres from such prestigious institutions as the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg; the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston; the Harvard Art Museums; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; and the Old South Church of Boston, as well as from private collectors and art dealers across the globe.
Adele Travisano
Adele’s artistic approach can be characterized as “fearless.” Her large canvases often feature subjects with bold colors and human forms. She was among the founding artists of the famous Vernon Street Studios in Somerville. Her works are displayed in several prominent locations in Medford, including City Hall, Shiloh Baptist Church, and Colleen’s.
Alix Fuerst
Alix is a talented portrait painter, both human, pets and wildlife. Based in Medford Massachusetts she studied Fine Arts at UNC Greensboro, North Carolina.
She specializes in using colored and graphite to creates realistic drawings of her subjects. The Hawthorn Gallery is pleased to oHering her work and looks forward to her upcoming participation in the Gallery’s Inaugural ARTIST AT WORK series beginning in August of 2026. Alix will be among local artists exhibiting their craft at the Gallery.
